Churches part 2: "The Reckoning"

I went and saw a Basia Bulat show a little over a month ago and it was really incredible. I’m not really in churches that often but I was blow away at how good the music sounded in that space. I want this to happen more!

There’s some weirdness in this one… and things I want to change or add but I think I’m just going to let it go and move onto the next one.

FAILURE

For the record, I don’t actually think I’m a failure. That’s not what this is about.

Not that I am successful by my own standards, either, but I am working on it. I want to make art, and I am, so that in itself is a victory. I just need to find a sustainable way to make art all the time.

Hope you dig it, this one took me way too long.

Church - part 1

Probably one of the coolest things about doing lots of short stories is that I get to have a lot of fun playing with different styles without having to actually commit to anything.

This one is weird. I was trying to draw in a way that doesn’t take too long to execute… but that always backfires when the drawings that don’t take long to execute also suck. I’m lazy, but I’m also a perfectionist so this approach doesn’t really work for me.

The writing is also a little weird because I was reading a lot of John Porcellino when I wrote it.

Now I’m reading a lot of Ivan Brunetti. Watch out.

More fun with layout

Here’s a new layout. It was done for an old piece of animation that I am in the process of cleaning up for my demo reel. The characters aren’t mine; they were designed by one of my old teachers, Barney wornoff.

I’m really anxious to get more comic work out but my time is torn between getting a real job and working the temporary one. I have a 3 pager all but done, I’ll try to find some more time in the day and get her out soon.

Love love, Jason! <3

Karl Marx and cafe sketching

The man in the image above has been in the Rideau centre food court every morning for the past five days. He always wears a red polo shirt and kind of looks like Karl Marx. This amuses me.

For a long time I was really into cafĂ© sketching. I’m not sure what happened in the last few months but I completely lost any joy I got out of doing it. Over the past week, though, I have been actively filling up pages in my sketchbook like a madman! Everything is a little rusty but I’m enjoying getting people, places and things down on paper.

Oh, also, I have joined the twitter. You should follow me at jasonbradshaw!

Eating a croissant

Here’s some animation.

I was trying a lot of things out here that I had been thinking about. Some things worked while others didn’t. like it for what it is, though, I think in the future I will try to have more of a narrative idea going into it.

I think the thing I enjoyed most about working on this was actually designing it. I loved doing the character design and the layout. I think to work in the animation industry I may be more suited to these disciplines.
