This comic stems from this really awful conversation I had a few months ago. Someone asked me what is meaningful to me and I couldn't for the life of me come up with an answer. When you stop being able to find meaning in anything it's hard to find much of a point, either, and that's really no way to live. It's incredibly self destructive. So, this is me asking questions. This is me moving past that.

Yes, folks, it’s true. I have stooped to new lows in trying to find contentment and completion. Rather than looking inside of myself to find the self-respect required to love myself I have once again started looking outward, to the seediest corners of the internet, in hopes of finding someone to do that for me. That’s right. I have been using Ok cupid.

I kind of hate it though.

I just re-watched this great film, Before Sunrise (Which you can view in its entirety here conveniently enough), which kind of completely blew the top off of me wanting to ever meet anyone through the Internet in such a contrived. Impersonal way. Watching this film was like re-living the intensity, awkwardness and spontaneity of getting to know someone in a real, tangible and gradual way. I want to feel that again. I needed that reminder. So, I highly recommend it.

It’s funny, I got so used to getting a lot of mail by doing trades and ordering people’s zines for a while that it feels weird not to get much anymore. Basically I’m just too poor at the moment to pour a lot of money into it (I haven’t even put Boredom Pays #4 up for sale yet because I can’t really even afford the printing. Been working on some things in the background over here at Boredom Pays inc. but mostly have just been absorbing as much art as I can.

I’ve been obsessing over some of Kubricks films. Like, I just watched Eyes Wide Shut last night and it completely floored me. Such a fantastic film and incredibly relevant to a lot of the things I’ve been thinking about relationships over the past few months. Plus, the way it’s shot, the dialogue, the pacing, colors acting and use of music? Holy Christ.

Also, been reading a lot of R. Crumb comics. It has taken me a long time to come around to reading a lot of his work because I find some of it pretty offensive have had a hard time getting past some of the pornographic (not because I find it offensive, just uninteresting) elements of some of his work. And… I don’t quite know how I feel about his work quite yet but I’m blown away by the total honesty and complete lack of self censorship he seems to apply to his work. It’s just… refreshing. Even when some of the things he talks about are uncomfortable to sit through. I dunno. The more I read the more I fall in love with his work. So good!

You know that moment? When the lyric “I deserve to be loved” comes through your headphones and you really feel it because the timing and key is simply perfect. You want to believe it but instead of having the self respect to agree with that statement in reference to yourself you just just kind of stare blankly ahead and aren’t sure whether you can or not? Yeah, that moment.

I wrote that in my sketchbook yesterday.

Last night I changed my mind. I do deserve to be loved. I deserve self respect. I deserve happiness. This is my one man picket line and I will never compromise on these terms or ever fucking capitulate for anything or anybody. Nobody ever should.

I don't really talk about it much in my comics but veganism is actually quite important to me. I've been vegan for the last... shit, 5 years? And, well, despite what most post-vegans will tell you it's actually incredibly easy. Except, of course, when you don't have the makings for pancakes on hand. Then you have to put yourself through hell to get said pancakes. Still, totally worth it!

Comics are the single most fulfilling thing I've ever done in my life

Canzine 2009 was the first time I ever tabled and sold my comics. Since then it has become a bit of a benchmark for me, both as a deadline to get more comics done, as well as a marker to show what I’ve accomplished over the past year. And so, this year? All I can really say is that it has been far beyond my expectations.

Aside from all of the friends I have been making over the past couple of years and the growing dedicated reader base I am utterly privileged to have(thank you so much!) Some things really stand out for me, such as Boredom Pays #2 getting nominated for a freaking Shuster - that blew me away and I seriously didn’t think I was ready for that kind of acknowledgment. Getting to table at TCAF this past year - important in that I first discovered mini comics through TCAF and, in the following year, actually traded my very own mini comics for the first time - that meant the world to me. And this past Sunday one of my comics heroes, Chester Brown, came by my table and bought some of my comics - that just felt… unreal.

These tangible, quantifiable benchmarks continue to amaze me. The thing that’s a little harder to put my finger on is the amount of healing making these things allow me to do. Like, my personal life this year was a wreck. I broke up with my girlfriend of eight years. My mother discovered she has a potentially life threatening brain tumor. I’ve been unemployed for five out of the last ten months. I’ve been on social assistance. I’ve made some really stupid decisions that have hurt people I care about. I’ve gone through the most debilitating bouts of depression I’ve ever had the misfortune to deal with. And so on. What held me together through the worst of this was this compulsion I have to put it down in writing. To analyze these things, organize them into little boxes so I can move past them. This is something I never used to have and I don’t know what I would have done without it this year.

I’m incredibly glad I started making comics. It has been the single most fulfilling thing I’ve ever done in my life.

I can’t wait to see what comics are going to bring me in the following year.

If you read, you'll judge. Anymore my sketchbooks are just a place for me to write comics rather than a place where I do tons of drawings. With the personal nature of the comics I make it can be a little awkward because there's a lot of stuff that never makes it to a final comic because I'm not sure I want to put that out there. So, yeah, awkward for strangers.

Also, man, these things look huge on the computer. I draw them at about 2.5x2.5 inches. A touch bigger, maybe. Always looks weird to me.

Hold on, give me a minute

So, me and my girlfriend of the past eight or so years broke up a couple of months ago. It's a good thing, super mutual and incredibly loving, etc. but it still kind of fucked me up. Well, not only this - there were a few other things in conjunction with the breakup - but I went through the worst bouts of depression that I've ever had right afterward. The kind of depression that makes it hard to get out of bed and do anything at all. I would literally nap 3-4 times a day for hours at a time. Fucked up. Anyways, that's kind of what this comic is about.

One album that I absolutely fell in love with in this period was I Clung To you hoping We'd Both Drown by Flatsound. It just captures exactly what I was feeling at this time. You can listen to the album over here. It's super good!

Anyway. I'm thinking I might put down autobio for a bit. I've got a lot of ideas and stories written out... but frankly I just don't want to draw them. At least not right now. We'll see what happens. Until next week!

A couple of months ago I really got into reading Johnny Ryan's Angry Youth Comix (which, I HIGHLY recommend, it's been a long time since I've laughed so much reading comix). As a result I wrote a bunch of comics with knives in them and stabbing stuff. A bunch of these comics had me stabbing myself. It was a weird time for me. I might draw a couple more of them, though, probably not along this pathetic self loathing tract.

With this internal struggle to be happy in a world that just drives me crazy. If it's getting repetitive please forgive me. I intend to move on from these depressing things eventually, but thinking about them takes up a lot of my time lately and it would be dishonest of me to write... I dunno, fart jokes or something.

One of my favorite people in the world is making music again. He's started a band called Ramshackle Glory, and from the two songs that are posted on their website the album that they're going to be putting out next month is going to be incredible. Really good punk rock with Banjo's, accordions and piano's. I love it.

One song in particular I love is the one titled "epic song". It made me think a lot about my own shit in a super productive way. Check it out.

Had a nice little surprise in the mail yesterday morning in the form of this super positive review of the second issue of Boredom Pays in the latest issue of Broken Pencil. Ch-check it out:

It Pays to read Boredom Pays. Jason Bradshaw's second installment of Boredom Pays has been nominated for a Schuster award, and I can see why. It's difficult not to identify with Bradshaw's protagonist whose heartbreaking struggle with depression is laid bare. At times elated, and at times mired in self loathing, he is emblematic of the contemporary existential anxieties of the underachiever. Bradshaw's drawings are reminiscent of the Terrytoon's era of cartoon, but, unlike its most famous heroes who outwitted every foe to triumph, Bradshaw's characters suffer more realistic outcomes. Where the protagonist of "Two years left" (whose beaky face evokes Heckle and Jeckle) has lofty ambitions, he's quickly - ahem - cut down to size. Bet beware of reducing Bradshaw's narratives to mere nihilism. There's more to his work than that. Fore every purported "FAILURE," there are moments of success, self-acceptance and finding beauty in everyday things (Sheetal Lodhia)

The worst in everything

Life has been kind of crazy over the last couple of weeks. I haven't been drawing comics. I've just been kind of... distracted I guess. My personal life took some weird, confusing turns. Things are good. Great even. Just different. It will come out in the comics over the coming weeks, I'm sure. Point being, I haven't been drawing comics. What I have been doing is writing a lot of comics.

I'm trying to be more deliberate with this issue of Boredom Pays. I've actually given myself a theme to base the issue around, and from the amount of notes that have poured into my sketchbook it's a good one. I've got a bunch of short strips written and a few longer stories gestating in my head. I'm really committed to making the next issue of Boredom Pays the best possible thing I can put out.

Which brings me to this comic. This is a mini I wrote last fall between drawings while working as a caricature artist at Canada's Wonderland. I was quite unhappy at the time and it's probably more whiny than anything else but I learned a lot about writing comics from putting this together so, despite its flaws I'm still fond of it. I figure since I won't be posting anything new for at least another week or so I would post something old that never made it onto the blog.

Also, just a reminder that I will be tabling in the small press exhibition at TCAF this Sunday from 11am-5pm! It would mean the world to me if you came by and said hi! And bought a book! So I can hopefully have enough money to eat over the next week! Yeah! Haha. See you there!

TCAF! Boredom Pays 3 for sale!

Hey everyone! I I've got some more comics in the works but in the meantime I figured I would make a couple of quick(not to mention awesome) announcements.

First off: I've officially put Boredom Pays#3 up for sale on the left hand side of the page. It's 40 pages of comics collecting all but one of the diary comics I've been posting on here since last fall presented in glorious black and white at the appealing size of 5.5x7.25 inches. I'm selling if for $6, but it should take at least twice as long to read than the last two issues.

Also: I'm officially going to be tabling on the Sunday of TCAF in the small press room between 11am and 5pm which I am TOTALLY STOKED about! TCAF is a really important festival to me because it is largely responsible for introducing me to the world of mini comics which has had an enormous effect on my life. Also, two years ago at the festival I gave out copies of my comics for the first time EVER so it feels like a major accomplishment to be on the other side of the table with work I'm proud of.

I am so much more excited about comics than I ever have been right now. I've got a lot of plans for future strips and things I want to do with them. It can only go up from here.

Boredom Pays #3 finished! Other stuff!

Well, it's been about a year since I put out an issue of Boredom Pays so I guess it's about time I got another issue out. It's 7.25x5.5 inches, 40 pages of black and white glory collecting all but one of the diary strips I've been posting on here for the past few months. I don't have it up for sale here yet, but I'll for sure have it up after this weekend.

Also, this Saturday (or, y'know, tomorrow) I'm going to be tabling at the Kazoo zine and comic expo in Guelph with my good friend Ollie who will likely be doing some awesome and super cheap caricatures. You should totally come by if you're in the area!

Then, on Sunday I'll be helping out Toronto's Artists Help Japan fundraiser. I'll be doing some live art, most likely some caricatures or sketches or something - I don't know - but it's going to be awesome! I'll be sketching from 6pm-9pm so you should come by, say hi and support the event, it's a really great initiative! For more information, go here.

Diary Doodles, an introduction

So this is going to be the introduction to the third issue of Boredom Pays. I've been killing it over the last couple of days trying to get this thing done and I'm happy to say that it's coming together quite well.

Also, just listened to a really great interview with Noah Van Sciver over on the ISR. I found out about Noah through Sam Spina and have since fell in love with his work. You should go check him out and buy the new issue of Blammo cause it's super good!

Yep, I think this is it. The last one. I'm in the process of compiling all of these Diary comics into the third issue of Boredom Pays. As it stands It's going to be 40 pages (4 comics per page) and likely at letter size. I'm still working on the cover, an introduction and a couple of other random illustrations but I should have it for the Kazoo zine and comic expo in Guelph on April 16th. After that I'll have copies of it for sale on here!

Also, I think I'm going to try to get out a new 8 page mini I wrote a couple of years ago about going to an Against me! show for TCAF in early May. No promises, but at the moment I'm super stoked about it!

For anyone who has read up to the end of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince you absolutely must check out the Scarred for life EP from the band Harry and the Potters. It's basically Harry Potter singing scathing hardcore songs about all the shit that happens in the book. I find it hilarious because it's such a silly idea played so straight. Brilliant! Check out the songs Blood of a Prince and Horcuxus. Of course, while you're at it you should check out everything else on their bandcamp page.

Also, Harry and the Potters are coming to Toronto in a couple of months - if you're in Toronto you should come and see them play with me! Excitement!
