Fun with layout

Here is some animation stuff I’ve been working on lately! I’m not done finishing/fixing the animation for these pieces but I thought it would be fun to show the layouts for them. They’re still works in progress (there’s still a bunch of stuff I need to fix on them…) so any comments or critiques would be appreciated.

I love John Porcellino

Did you know that John Porcellino worked in a health food store? Did you know that I work in a health food store? Isn’t that AMAZING? Ok, no, not really but that’s what this is about anyways. If you’re not familiar with Porcellino’s work you should do yourself a favor and check it out. I personally think he is one of the most interesting and powerful cartoonists out there today.

The first thing I ever read of his was Perfect Example. I use the library a lot for comics and I had borrowed every single non-superhero book from my local branch before I would give Porcellino a shot. I was always put off by the art. I thought it looked lazy and pretentious and always kind of looked down on it but it was the only book left so I figured I would try it out… and it blew me away. This book is so human and almost uncomfortably honest. After reading it I think the simplicity in the art amplifies everything in the writing and I don’t think it would work quite as well if it was drawn any other way.

(The top right panel here is one of my favorite panels ever!)

I know a lot of people have false starts with his work, but seriously, give it a chance. I cant recommend John Porcellino high enough!

Fire in the sky

Last night I went with Lisa and some of her friends to the opening of Winterlude; a big winter festival here in Ottawa. I'm not generally a fan of fireworks they had a HUGE show of them to kick everything off and it was so AMAZING that it made me question my own existence.

The Ghost Mice destroy me

There's something about the music of Ghost Mice that really gets to me. There is such a feeling of optimism and a love for life in their songs that's really inspiring. I really need to get over myself and adapt their attitude.

Sorry for the downer, folks.

Broken Pencil review

Yesterday I got the new issue of Broken Pencil in the mail and to my surprise it had a review of the cookzine Lisa and I did over the summer, Small Potatoes(check it out). It’s a nice little review and reminds me that we still intend to do another volume.

If you’re interested in getting a copy you can purchase one from our etsy shop by clicking on the thumbnail over on the left!

I've been wanting to draw more comics than I have been lately. But I've been working on my demo reel so i can get a real job. This has been taking priority at the moment. Still, I think I'm going to try to find the time to squeeze these little ones out at night while we watch TV and wind down... I just need to be a little less precious with them.
