Anxiety, anxiety

Jason and the giant pile of books

I think, so far, from all of the Peanuts strips I've been reading the 50's era is my favorite. There's this weird charm in the drawings that somehow gets lost in the later strips that I adore. The writing seems a little more... I dunno... wholesome or something? I don't know but I really like it. Below are a couple of my favorite strips from the little collection I'm talking about in this comic. Enjoy!

I am a WIZARD!

Here's a silly little comic that I made! Sort of. I still need to finish designing the actual book but from what I've got so far it's going to be pretty awesome. The actual mini comic version of this will be 4x4 inches, 16 pages (all of the little blocks represent pages - so really only 12 pages of comics) with a color card stock cover and hand done spot color on the interior.

It's kind of a lot of work to put into something that took me all of 5 minutes to write but what can I say? I LOVE making these things into actual physical mini comics. For me, they somehow don't feel quite as complete unless I have it in a printed format.

I should have the actual mini put together and for sale by the end of the week!

Also, speaking of Harry Potter, have you heard of this little band called Harry and the Potters? They're great! Basically the idea behind the band is the Harry quits the Quittage team and starts his own punk rock band. I think it's a pretty hilarious idea but I was surprised that they're actually really god damned good as well. They've got some really poppy fun songs (A favorite of mine is Save Ginny Weasley) to angry screamy punk (listen to the Scarred for life EP - pure gold) songs, and everything in between. Good stuff!

You can stream all of their music from their bandcamp page, and you should! Lord knows I've listened to a lot of it while working on this project!

Postal comix

I got some awesome stuff in the mail this week, including the John Poricellino's latest issue of King-Cat, the latest issue of Alec Longstreth's Phase 7 and both of Liz Prince's I swallowed the key to my heart. I've only had a chance to read King-Cat, and it was awesome (as expected!).

I was planning on posting half of a new mini comic here today, but I think I'm just going to wait until it's done, which will for sure be next week. It's about Harry Potter and being happy with who you are! Be excited!

Lust for life

Went out to an awesome local coffee with my good friend Oliver last night when this bluegrass band randomly came in and started playing. The place got pretty packed! It was exciting! Really fun music to draw to.

Me and Ollie also got talking about a little project of his, tentatively called "My life as told through interpretive dance" (or something - it keeps changing) and we might be working together to make it into a nice little mini comic. I have always really liked Olivers drawings and this project in particular is both adorable and hilarious based on what I've seen so far. He's posted a little snippet of it over on his blog - please go check it out because it's aweosme!

And hell, while you're at it you should go check out the new Taxpayers album, To risk so much for one damn meal. This band is seriously my favorite punk band since coming across Andrew Jackson Jihad a few years ago. Constantly changing their sound in new and interesting ways - just what a punk band should be!

This album has a cleaner sound and TONS of horns. It's obviously a very well written and planned album and has a really nice pace to it. Like their other albums it's a little all over the place stylistically but it's a little more coherent here, in my opinion. a couple of songs that I particularly love are some kind of disaster relief and it gets worse every minute but really, the entire album is fantastic!

This comic is sort of a manifesto for me. I'm done with making comics about my depression. It's just not productive for me anymore. This year I'm going to beat this thing if it kills me because I don't exactly have any other options. Get with the living or get with the dying.
